We are changing gears here at DX Central as it relates to our MW Frequency Challenges. After cycling through every single MW frequency at least twice over the past 4 seasons, we will spend the rest of Season 4 not focusing on specific frequency ranges, but rather a theme-based challenge approach.
For weeks 31 & 32 of Season 4 - our final challenge of the season - we are going to end the season on a bit of a lighter note with The Alphabet Challenge!
The goal is simple, log a station for each letter of the English alphabet (A-Z) using the first letter after the prefix of the station callsign (therefore, we are only using US, Canadian and Mexican stations only for this challenge). So, for US stations, that is the first letter after the K/W. For Canadians, it is the first letter after the C. For Mexican stations, it is the first letter after the XE/XH.
Wait, did Loyd just say XH? Does that mean.....?
YES! We are opening this challenge up to both AM AND FM receptions! However, these are two separate categories. You are trying to get all letters A-Z with AM stations and A-Z with FM stations separately.
DXers can submit logs for only AM, only FM or both, as you see fit. But again, AM logs do not count towards the FM alphabet and vice versa.
Additionally, as an added bonus challenge, once you complete the A-Z portion of the challenge, why not try to spell D-X-C-E-N-T-R-A-L?! Only, you cannot use the same station you did in the A-Z portion....it has to be a new and unique station. Just like the A-Z challenge, there is a separate challenge for AM and FM for spelling out D-X-C-E-N-T-R-A-L.
The challenge begins at 0100 UTC on Saturday, April 19, 2025 and runs through 0100 UTC on Saturday, May 3, 2025. Only receptions made during this timeframe will count towards the challenge.
The entire mediumwave AND FM band is available to DXers to complete this challenge from 530 to 1710 kHz and from 88.1 to 107.9 MHz. Only licensed stations are allowed for this challenge so no pirate stations. For this challenge on the AM side, no TIS/HAR stations are allowed. On the FM side, no talking houses but LPFM and translators are allowed. As always, no spurs, no images, no harmonics, etc.
Portable operations are encouraged, within 25 miles of your home location.
DXers must use their own equipment for this challenge. Online SDRs are only allowed if they belong to or are managed/maintained by the submitting DXer..
Entries can be made at dxchallenges.com (does require users to register).
Good luck to all DXers!
