The Van Horn Collection

MILCOM MONITORING POST

Milcom expert Larry Van Horn (N5FPW) has his finger directly on the pulse of all things military communications on HF/VHF/UHF.  When forces move on the planetary chessboard, this is the place you want to go to find out how to listen in.Don't wait for the news, plug in directly!

BTOWN MONITORING POST

The combined forces of Larry and Gayle Van Horn bring you all things RF at the infamous Brasstown Monitoring Post.  Tucked into a quiet mountainside location, if it transmits, they hear it, log and try to get a QSL!  Catch-all resource for the hard core DXer

SHORTWAVE CENTRAL

From Gayle Van Horn (W4GVH) the manager of the exhaustive Monitoring Times Frequency Guide (for years it was the TV Guide of Shortwave) to publisher of The Global Radio Guide and more, a fantastic blog for all things shortwave radio.  Let her show you the bands are not dead after all!

DX/Radio-related Retail

UNIVERSAL RADIO

Other than the now defunct Grove Enterprises, this is the place where I got my start in DX gear.  I used to pore through the pages of their catalog and dream.  Fred and the crew do great work! You can find stuff here that many other DX-centric stores either don't have

HAM RADIO OUTLET

Also focuses mostly on Ham Radio but you can find some fantastic receivers and antennas here, including the SDR Play RSPdx which I absolutely love.

DX ENGINEERING

Mostly focuses on Ham Radio but in addition to receivers they have a huge assortment ot receiving antennas and components to build unbeatable receiving antennas.  If you are serious about this DXing thing, definitely give them a look.

GIGAPARTS

You can find everything here, especially if you are a radio do-it-yourselfer.  If you like to tinker, make antennas, or really get hands-on with the hobby, this is a great place.  Prices are usually very competitive as well.

Solar Conditions and Forecasts

SOLARHAM.COM

One-stop for just about everything you need to know in conditions, solar forecasts, etc.  Much of radio propagation is influenced or controlled by solar activity - especially on the mediumwave and HF spectrum.  Learning the ins and outs of this science will serve you well in your DX pursuits.

Screen%20Shot%202020-02-02%20at%2012.31_

HF-RADIO.ORG

MW and especially HF frequencies are highly impacted by solar activity.  Not just from solar storms, but also from the number of sunspots on the surface of the sun.  So sites like this track and provide data around sunspot numbers and their impact on radio propagation.

N0NBH SOLAR PROPAGATION

This is the one that everyone links to for current solar conditions, A-index, K-index, solar flux, etc.  These are critical indicators for what to expect on the AM bands, especially to identify aurora conditions when there will be enhancement for stations closer to the equator (away from the poles)

NOAA SPACE WEATHER

Straight from the horses mouth, the most recent space weather forecast from NOAA and their Space Weather Prediction Center.  Can tell you about upcoming solar events, storms, and give you a heads up if aurora or other solar conditions are on their way to the MW bands.

General DX-related Sites

SWLINGPOST

Great resource for general DX information including AM and FM DX-related articles.  Also a great resource for general DX knowledge, radio and antenna information and more.  Highly recommend.

SPECTRUM MONITOR

Has nicely filled the void left after the demise of Monitoring Times with a digital-only publication.  Many former MT writers make an appearance here including SM founder, Ken Reitz.

From Universal Radio, fantastic source of information on DXing, including primers on terminology, techniques, and other information necessary for beginners!
